There are a multitude of addictions all serving the same purpose; they enable avoidance of feeling and thinking, distracting attention from what is truly troubling us.
An addiction can be defined as a reality avoidance behaviour that a person engages in repeatedly, often to such an extent that it causes them negative consequences. It is extremely difficult to stop on one’s own, and emotions such as anxiety, despair, loneliness and anger can further urge engagement with addictive behaviour.
