Many of us suffer from low self-esteem. We find it difficult to see value in ourselves and feel proud of our qualities and strengths.
Unable to appreciate our unique skills and resources, low self-esteem impairs our ability to accomplish tasks or overcome obstacles. Often our self-perception is unrealistic and extends to our body image. Accompanying this negative thinking about ourselves, we may also feel anxiety, depression, loneliness and anger.
A low self-esteem has specific causes.
We may have received too much criticism or not enough praise as a child. Children are sometimes told - “You do not have the intelligence for that” or “You won’t be able to do that” or “I wish you could be like …...” Our experiences as adults reinforce these self-perceptions and lack of confidence.
Undoing the trauma.
It is through personal growth that your life will improve. Together, we will work to help you understand why you have low self-esteem, and consequently, lack confidence. Undoing your trauma by feeling the emotions from the initial injury and remembering what was said or done, you will question the validity of what was said - recognizing that it was not true and the emotional injury unjustified. Ultimately, you will find a new narrative that allows you to view yourself positively and give yourself credit for demonstrating resourcefulness.
